I already read cards. Why ask someone else?

In the last few years, more and more people have learned to use divination tools for themselves. Tarot cards, oracle cards, pendulums, and other forms of divination have become increasingly popular. Books, classes, and online resources on how to use them are now widely available. So what’s the difference between seeking answers on your own versus seeking out someone else for a reading?

Let’s start with some of the positive aspects of reading for yourself. I am a big proponent of learning to trust your own intuition and spiritual practice. Reading cards for yourself is a wonderful way to strengthen that connection. It can help you gain confidence in your own abilities and learn to better listen to your intuition and spirit guides. It also gives you the empowering experience of learning a new skill and developing trust in yourself.

With Tarot in particular, there is a tremendous amount to learn just to scratch the surface. One of the things I love most about Tarot is that it’s something I can continue to study and deepen my understanding of over the course of my lifetime. Even after reading professionally for several years, I am still constantly learning from other readers, books, and my own experiences with the cards.

The best way to begin learning Tarot is, in fact, by reading for yourself. It helps you practice remembering the meanings and symbolism of the cards while also teaching you to trust yourself when interpreting how those meanings apply to a specific situation.

And let’s not forget one of the biggest advantages of having your own cards and relationship with them: you always have access to guidance when you need it. The very first reading I ever did for myself happened in the middle of the night when I was searching for answers to serious questions. There was no practical way to ask someone else for help at that hour. Reading for myself helped me sort through my thoughts and emotions in the moment and gave me clarity when I needed it most.

When you invest in yourself and your own spiritual abilities, you gain a greater sense of freedom and independence that often carries over into other areas of your life as well.

Now let’s talk about why you might still want to seek out another reader.

The number one reason is perspective. Another reader is naturally going to be less emotionally attached and therefore more objective. It’s very easy for any of us to interpret cards in ways that align with what we hope to hear. A reputable reader can help you face hard truths and difficult situations with honesty and compassion instead of simply telling you what you want to hear.

While I personally like to find hope and constructive guidance within a reading, that comes from looking at the cards as objectively as possible. If difficult information appears, I don’t shy away from it. Instead, we explore how to best navigate the challenges showing up in the reading.

Another reason to seek a reading from someone else is confirmation. It’s one thing to sit in the privacy of your own space and receive messages you believe are real. It’s another to ask the same questions of an outside reader and discover similar themes or answers appearing, especially when dealing with major life decisions.

Lastly, seeking readings from others can actually help you become a better reader yourself. Tarot has so much depth that seeing how different readers interpret and connect with the cards can become a valuable learning experience in addition to the guidance you receive.
